Aeropuerto Ecológico Galápagos, unique for its characteristics and specific conditions, has been projected as the first airport with sustainability certification and environmental quality. The initiative for the development and transformation of the airport as a whole, and the passengers terminal building in particular, complies with international sustainability systems requirements, specially the LEED Gold certification of the U.S. Green Building Council. The project achieves a very particular design as it is developed to thrive on solar energy without direct entrance of light, and to make the most effective use of the wind which -through a system of ducts generates a cool breeze in the terminal. Part of the energy demand is satisfied with the use of solar energy, and in turn 30% of clean water in sanitary installations will be saved with the use of rainwater. During the year 2019, 527 thousand passengers used the Galapagos Airport.
